This week, I am eagerly waiting on:

Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo book cover
Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo (originally published as Good Oil in Australia)
Publisher: Random House Children's
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Young Adult
Publication Date: 11, Dec. 2012
A wonderful, coming-of-age love story from a fresh new voice in YA fiction.

'Miss Amelia Hayes, welcome to The Land of Dreams. I am the staff trainer. I will call you grasshopper and you will call me sensei and I will give you the good oil. Right? And just so you know, I'm open to all kinds of bribery.'

From the moment 15-year-old Amelia begins work on the checkout at Woolworths she is sunk, gone, lost...head-over-heels in love with Chris. Chris is the funny, charming, man-about-Woolies, but he's 21, and the 6-year difference in their ages may as well be 100. Chris and Amelia talk about everything from Second Wave Feminism to Great Expectations and Alien but will he ever look at her in the way she wants him to? And if he does, will it be everything she hopes?

I may, or may not, be excited for this one purely because of the title. ;)
It sounds a bit quirky and fun, and I just love me a good book set in Australia.

What are you waiting on?

  1. Sounds different! I feel like it will be sad because a lot of times the 15 year old builds feelings up and then the 21 year old crushes them.

    1. That's very true...I'm kind of worried about that part, but I'm holding out for a good ending.

  2. This sounds cute - not sure what that oil thing means but hey, it's early in the morning right now. Maybe 15/21 isn't as big of a deal in Australia as it is here? I'd be rooting for them!

    1. That's the only part I'm worried about. It sounds like the setup for a big letdown. :(

Also: I looked up 'good oil' in an Aussie slang dictionary (I have no idea what it means, either), and it had a few different definitions. I take it to mean either the absolute best advice, the truth, or getting something that you really needed, depending on how you use it.

    1. I definitely agree. I'm still worried about that 15/21 thing. But for some reason, I'm really into finding out what happens.

  5. Aww, this sounds like such a cute book! I wonder if the two characters will end up together since age differences tend to not work out in YA, hm. Love the title too, can't wait to read this book. Thank you for sharing. :D

  6. ONE OF MY NEW FAVOURITE BOOKS!!! It's called 'Good Oil' here in Australia. It is such a great contemporary read, realistic and achey. You'll definitely be begging for a sequel or something. I really didn't want to let go of the characters (which means this is total re-read material)!

  14. Why has it taken me so long to follow your blog?!! I thought I was. I love blogs with content ratings. It is so helpful which is why I do it too. I found your blog months ago, and that's when you inspired me with highlighting the spoiler part. You're a genius. :)
