Foreign Cover Friday: Beautiful Creatures

Foreign Cover Friday is a weekly meme hosted by me (The Reading Fever), where foreign covers of the books we know and love are spotlighted and discussed. To join, either pick your favorite foreign cover, or pick many foreign covers, and start discussing!

This week's featured cover is:

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

I'm sorry this is late! I forgot to post it before I went to the midnight showing of The 3 Musketeers (huge mistake...it was terribly cliche and we ended up walking out in the middle of it). I'm getting the post up now. Hopefully it's in time for anyone who wanted to participate!

This is the US and UK cover for this book. I don't think it looks like much on my computer screen, but in person it's a gorgeous cover. It's dark, and the letters are raised and shimmery. I picked this one up just because of how much I liked it.

 Editions: Bulagarian & Czech languages
Love this Bulgarian cover. I love the gate, the fog, and the creepy silhouette. Plus, it's purple! It's my favorite of all of them. I like the Czech cover because it looks like it's about [girly] monsters. It's creepy and dark and cool.

Bulgarian translation: Beautiful Creatures
Czech translation: Beautiful Creatures

 Covers: Dutch & French languages
I like this Dutch cover. I like the placement of the silhouette, and the way her hair drapes. The title is cute, too. The French cover looks interesting, but it doesn't appeal to me in a way that would make me pick it up in a store.

Dutch translation: Enchanted
French translation: 16 Moons

 Editions: German & Greek languages
This German cover had me stumped for a minute or two, while I tried to remember if there had ever been any mention of wolves in the story, until I realized that it's actually a bird silhouette in front of the moon. With a quick glance, it looks like a wolf howling. Don't you think?
Love the swirls on the title of the Greek cover.

German translation: An Immortal Love
Greek translation: Beautiful Creatures

 Editions: Indonesian & Italian languages
I really like the Indonesian cover. I like the way the photos relate to the tree (like a family tree, which has a lot to do with the plot), and the cartoon-ish look to it.

Indonesian translation: Beautiful Love
Italian translation: The Sixteenth Moon

 Editions: Lithuanian & Polish languages
I'm not a fan of the Lithuanian cover for the same reason as the French cover; it's just not something I would pick up in a store. More pretty swirls coming from the Polish cover catch my eye, though. I am totally sold on swirls and vines every time, and these are the best of all of them.

Lithuanian translation: 16 Moons
Polish translation: Beautiful Creatures

Editions: Portuguese languages; Portugal & Brazil
(Thanks for the correction, Mafi!)
I'm not sure if this is a mistake, but these both come up as Portuguese language versions of Beautiful Creatures, and they both have different titles. Seriously, I tested everything I could about them to determine what the difference was, but they both seem to be legit. Problem solved!
I like that the second one is similar to the first with the tree silhouette, but it's still different.

Translations
Cover 1: Wonderful Creatures
Cover 2: Sixteen Moons

Editions: Romanian & Serbian languages
Another cover that doesn't appeal to me. I'm just really not a fan of it. The Serbian cover is pretty cool with the snow and the huge trees. I can't place the relevance, though (it's been a while since I've read it), but I would definitely pick it up.

Romanian translation: A Sixteenth Month
Serbian translation: Beautiful Creatures

 Editions: Spanish & Turkish languages
Pretty swirls!

Spanish translation: Beautiful Creatures
Turkish translation: Magnificent Creatures

Valencian (Catalan) language edition
Similar to the other covers, but slightly different.

Translation: Strange Creatures

What are your thoughts?
Which covers do you like? Which do you hate?

  4. Another vote in favor of the French/Romanian covers. They are simple and clean. I've never really been a fan of the US covers.

  5. The covers and the tiles in portuguese are different because they are not from the same country. The first one is from Portugal and the other is from Brazil ;) Both countries speak Portuguese.

  9. You know, I think I like the Bulagarian and French/Romanian covers even better than the US one. The US one actually wouldn't inspire me to pick this one off the shelves, but those foreign ones do.

  13. I like the cover for the Bulgarian translation best, it has this old-school mystery feeling to it that most of the others lack, even though the gfx design is nice (especially for the french one). the German one is too cliche by far I think.

  15. Brazil and Portugal are different countries and the Portuguese language is also different. Each has its edition, so these things happen.
