Foreign Cover Friday: Vampire Academy

Foreign Cover Friday is a weekly meme hosted by me (The Reading Fever), where foreign covers of the books we know and love are spotlighted and discussed. To join, either pick your favorite foreign cover, or pick many foreign covers, and start discussing!

This week's featured cover is:

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Is it just me, or does this cover model look like Angelina Jolie? It throws me off all the time because whenever I look at it, I think of Tomb Raider, or Mr. & Mrs. Smith, or any other of the many movies she has done. I don't think vampires.

These are some other US covers. I really, REALLY like the cover on the left. It is dark and edgy, and the closed gate gives me the feeling that I'm not sure I want to know what goes on in the academy...which of course makes me want to read the book immediately.

Now for the foreign covers!

These first three are the Lithuanian, Danish, and Polish covers. All three titles translate to Vampire Academy.

These are are French, Czech, and UK covers. The French title translation is: Sisters of Blood, and the Czech translation is: Vampire Academy.

Two variations of the Spanish cover. I didn't think the first cover was a Spanish version, but I found three of the same covers, all by Spanish publishing companies. I like the white rose with the drops of blood on the other cover.

These two are the Croatian and German covers. I'm not really liking the nose shot on the cover model, but I really like the background photo.
Croatian translation: Vampire Academy: Sisters in Blood
German translation: Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters

Here we have the Portuguese and Indonesian covers. I LOVE the Indonesian cover. There's something about that fence  and the color red that I really like.
Portuguese translation: Vampire Academy

I really like these next three covers: Flemmish, Greek, and Italian. The girl's hair turning into butterflies on the Flemmish cover is cool, I like that there is a different cover model on the Greek cover (no more Angelina Jolie), and the schoolgirl vampire look on the Italian cover is cool, too.
Flemmish translation: Vampire Academy
Italian translation: The Academy of Vampires

Lastly, these are the Russian Bulgarian, Turkish, and Swedish covers. I should probably change things up a little, because I seem to always save the ones I like the least for last, but truth be told, I'm not very into these covers.
Russian Bulgarian translation: Academy of Vampires
Turkish translation: Vampire Academy
Swedish translation: Thirst

What are your thoughts?
Which covers do you like? Which do you hate?

  1. My favourite is the US cover that is red with the black rose on the front. How symbolic! Rose and roses. I actually have the last book in the series as a red one, with the other five the normal covers. I wished I had all the red ones! They are so gorgeous.
I also really like the Spanish cover with the white rose on front.

  2. Lissa: I hadn't even made that connection! I'm not sure why I didn't before, but you are so right! The rose to go with Rose. I like that cover a lot more now. :)

  5. I agree that the nose shot on the covers for the German and Croatian translations is unfortunately chosen.
My personal favorite would be the white rose with blood drops, as using models for covers (instead of not showing any characters at all or even having an illustration) takes away from the reader's imagination.

  6. Cole: Great pick! I like your reason behind it as well. There have been so many times when my picture of a character has been ruined by the person I see on the cover.

  8. Ooh, thanks for pointing that out. I researched it, and that cover is for the Bulgarian language edition, so I just changed it. :) I have no idea how I missed it.
