Blog Tour, Guest Post by Angela Henry, & TWO Giveaways!

Hey everyone! Today I have a guest post from Angela Henry, author of The Paris Secret, as part of the book's blog tour. Angela created this short video as an introduction to her post:

The Day in the Life of an Author

Contrary to what many people think, authors don’t live glamorous lives. It’s true.
The majority of us aren’t lounging by the pool eating bon bons all day while reading
our fan mail, fielding phone calls from producers who want to turn our books into
movies, or jetting around the world for book signings. In fact, most of us have day
jobs. I’ve worked in the library field for more than 20 years. I’ve been at my current
job in a college library for 16 ½ years. Here’s what my typical day looks like.

6:00am – Shake a fist at my alarm clock and curse the daylight before rolling out of
bed still half asleep.

6:05am to 7:05am - Shower, brush teeth, curl my hair, iron clothes, notice my shirt
is missing a button (How’d that happen?). Grab another shirt and notice the big
grease stain on the front didn’t come out in the wash. Crap! It’s getting late so I wear
shirt that’s missing button and hope no one notices.

7:15, yes, 7:15am – Arrive at work, make coffee for the coffee drinkers, fill water
pot for me and my fellow tea drinkers, read notes left by evening staff.

7:25am - Head to my office, check email, voicemail, Amazon ranking, eat breakfast
(Chibani yogurt. Yum!), read news, write notes for idea I had about a scene for one
of my WIPs (I have several). Enjoy the peace and quiet.

7:50am – Open library and take my seat behind circulation desk. Brace myself for
the onslaught of students, faculty and staff needing things before their 8 o’clock
classes. Update library’s Facebook page.

8:00am to 8:20am – Shoot the shit with coworkers and vow to stay away from
the big box of donuts my boss brought in before packing shipment of ILL books
requested by other college libraries. Cringe when someone points out I have a
missing button.

8:45am – Have a donut, or two, and first cup of tea while reading Shelf Awareness
and Publisher’s Marketplace. See a book deal announcement for an author friend
and squee for them. See a deal announcement for a sequel to a book I loved and
get excited. See major seven-figure book deal announcement for book described
as Marley and Me meets The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and curse my lack of

9:00am to 11:00 am – Check books in and out, check in magazines and
newspapers, answer reference questions, frantically stop print job for student who
accidentally printed 200 copies of fifty page journal article, patiently explain for the
millionth time that the library doesn’t sell textbooks, try to find a video for a faculty

member who can’t remember title of video but knows it’s about enemas, gently, but
firmly, turn down a donation of computer books from 1980. Check Amazon ranking.

11:00am to 1pm – All of the above, plus, sneak in a few hundred words on WIP
during downtime, read about the latest new ereader on Galleycat, get a Google alert
for a review of one of my books and agonize over whether to read it or not.

1pm to 2pm – Eat lunch in office (Lean Cuisine, fruit and another donut), while
either reading or watching an anime DVD, make personal phone calls, check Amazon

2pm to 4pm – Repeat hours 9 to 11, attend staff meeting and try to convince
collection development librarian why we need to add Hobo with a Shotgun to our
DVD collection, fidget in chair when butt goes numb as meeting goes too long.

4:15pm – Quitting time!

4:30 to 5pm – Go home, have a snack, check Amazon ranking just in cast I hit the
bestsellers list while I was on my way home from work. Find missing button in my
bra. Go figure.

5pm to 8pm – Nap, eat dinner, watch a little TV, wash dishes, answer emails, check
Amazon ranking.

8pm to 10pm – Write. Write. Write.

10pm to 11pm – Eat a bowl of ice cream (chocolate), read, and brush my teeth
before turning out the lights and going to sleep so I can get up and do it all again

And there you have it. Pretty glamorous, huh?

Thanks, Angela! It sounds like a hectic, but interesting workday. I'm glad you could share it with us! :)

Angela Henry was once told that her past life careers included spy, researcher and investigator. She stuck with what she knew because today she's a mystery-writing, library reference specialist, who loves to people-watch and eavesdrop on conversations. She's the author of four mysteries featuring equally nosy amateur sleuth Kendra Clayton, and is also the founder of the award-winning MystNoir website, which promotes African-American mystery writers, and was named a “Hot Site" by USATODAY.com. When she's not working, writing or practicing her stealth, she loves to travel, is a connoisseur of B horror movies and an admitted anime addict. She lives in Ohio and is currently hard at work trying to meet her next deadline.

    5. When I want to feel most confident, I wear my favorite purple shirt thats not too fancy but is sort of a dress shirt. Coupled with a pair of skinny jeans and some black heals, I fell great! (Especially when someone tells me I Look great as well)

    6. I will wear black pants and a wine colored shirt preferably with a baby-doll cut. Thank you for the fun day in the life and giveaway opportunity.

    7. Fun interview. My day doesn't look too different, unfortunately! ;)

Hmm, my "confident clothes?" Probably this 1950's style black and yellow dress with my faux pearls. I know it's kitch, but I love the way I look in it, and swirly skirts are always fun!

    8. Must wear high heels! For some reason, I feel like I'm exuding self-confidence when I have high heels on!

      Thanks for the giveaway!
