Where Is Rickon? (A Song of Love and Frustration)

Well, I've jumped on the bandwagon--the Game of Thrones bandwagon. All you who have been fans for over a decade are probably rolling your eyes at how late I've come into the game (see what I did there?), but I don't care. This series rocks. I just finished the fourth book, and have only the fifth to read before joining the ranks of those who must wait longer than should be possible for the next two books to come out.

Right now, Goodreads has the sixth book listed as coming out in 2014--TWO whole years from now--and the seventh book listed to come out in the year 2020. And from what I hear of George R.R. Martin's track record, those are both hopeful dates. What on Earth have I done to myself? I can't possibly wait that long. *More eye rolling from the crowd*

Anyhow, this series has become my absolute favorite; knocking Gone With the Wind out of first place and pushing the likes of Harry Potter, LOTR, and even the amazing Hunger Games, back further in line. I don't want to read anything else. I just want to live a bit longer in the land of Westeros, where secrets abound, the bad guys rule, the good guys turn bad, and almost everyone I have come to love has died--and then some.

So my fellow ASoFaI lovers, I'm calling you out.
Come discuss the books with me! Who are your favorite characters? Who do you want for king/queen? What conspiracies or plots do you see in the making? And how long have you been a fan?

And, because I always like to design things to display after reading good books (it helps me calm my need to just read and read more), the following posters are just some of the conspiracy theories and/or hopes I have for the books.

Spoilers abound...if you haven't read the books.

  1. Hey there!

You aren't the only late one on the bandwagon. I am actually behind you! :) I'm only on Book 2, so I can't talk a whole lot about the series, but I got to tell you I threw the book against the wall when they killed Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark at the end of Book 1. He was one of my favorite characters. My other favorite is Tyrion. One of the best things about Martin's writing though is that he is willing to go to places other writers won't. Can you say incest? attempted child murder? When Cerci's brother pushed Rickon out the tower window I actually jumped up and exclaimed "You didn't!!!" I had to read it again to make sure I read it right the first time. OMG! He did! I look forward to reading the rest of the books, but I may hold off until Martin finishes the series so I don't torture myself. 6 years between Book 6 and 7 seems extreme. I've heard Martin threaten to extend the number of books too. Yikes!

    1. I completely agree with you. He will take his characters wherever they need to go to be true to their characterizations...which is what I think is so admirable. And about waiting to read the rest: good call. I'm almost done with the 5th book, and I'm looking at the YEARS ahead of me before another one comes along, with despair. I wish they were all already published!! On the other hand, I think book 3 is the best one so far. You may want to at least read that one. :)

  3. PUSHING HARRY POTTER BACK?! *gasp* I don't know why I'm so reluctant to start this series. Maybe the sheer SIZE of the books is putting me off, given the 132324 other books I need to get through. But I was also reluctant to watch the show, thinking it wasn't 'for me'.... HOW SURPRISED I WAS!! So effing addictive! I'm totally in love with it now. I.... think I need to give in and just start the books, because clearly I'm missing out on something amazing!!

100% support "Arya for Queen!" she and Tyrion are two of my favourites from the show. And.... am I reading into the Jon Snow image right?!?! (I can't help myself, I'm a sucker for spoilers :P)

    1. Oh, you should totally start it! Although, beware: after I read this series, every other series felt different to me. It took me a while to begin reading other books because a)I just wanted more GoT, and b)Other books didn't feel real enough. GRRM's characterizations feel so real! And he kills off many characters. It's still so shocking when it happens, but that's the part that I think makes it feel so real. People really live and die in this series, and no one is safe. Anyway, let me know what you think of the books if you do end up giving them a try! I think you'll love them very much!

Also: Arya and Tyrion are my favorites, too! I also like the Hound. :) And about the Jon Snow image, it could technically be considered a spoiler, but since you like spoilers.... :)

      ***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***SPOILER ALERT***
It's nothing that has been confirmed yet, but a lot of people in the fandom are convinced that Jon is actually the son of Lyanna Stark (Ned Stark's sister who died the year Jon was born...basically the reason Ned and Robert Baratheon overthrew the kingdom) and Rhaegar Targaryen (the Mad King's son; the one that Robert killed, and the one who would have been the next king. There are very subtle lines in the books that point to this being a possibility, but nothing concrete. There's also the fact that Ned Stark never tells Jon he's his son, but instead tells him: "you're my blood." Anyway, it could be wrong or right...I just reaaaaally hope it's right. :)
