Sarvenaz Tash | Class of 2K12

Today I have author Sarvenaz Tash here, as part of my Class of 2K12 interview series! Sarvenaz Tash's debut novel, The Mapmaker and the Ghost (more on the book below), hits stores today!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and any hobbies you have?
Sure! My name is Sarvenaz but most people call me Sarv. However, if we ever meet and you
pronounce my full name correctly, I will secretly like you just a little bit more.

I spend a lot of my free time reading and writing. I also started learning the guitar a couple of
years ago and I find it’s been really great to do something creative that uses a different part
of my brain. Funnily enough, I was inspired to pick up the guitar because of all the time I was
spending playing Rock Band.

Which is not to say I don’t still enjoy “playing” with my Rock Band band. We’re called Ugly
Sweater and we pretty much rule the world of plastic instruments.

What do you want readers to feel after reading your book?
I mostly want them to laugh and feel like they just went on an adventure, too.

What was the hardest scene or chapter to write, and why?
Chapter 2! For some reason, I rewrote that chapter, literally, over 17 times. It was the chapter
that segued from one setting to another and where the main story really took off and I think I
had a hard time finding the balance between having enough exposition and making sure there
was still something happening.

What has been the most rewarding part of having your book published?
It really has been a lifelong dream so having that come true has been truly exhilarating. It’s
hard to ask for more than that from life! It’s also been really great to connect with all these other
wonderful debut authors (such as those in the class of 2K12).

And just for fun: Everyone has a bizarre hidden talent. Care to share yours?
I do a mean Toni Braxton impression. So if we’re ever at karaoke together, make sure to punch
in “Unbreak My Heart.”

Ooh, I think a vlog of you singing "Unbreak My Heart" is in order! Also: Ugly Sweater is an awesome Rock Band band name. :)
Thanks for answering my questions!

The Mapmaker and the Ghost by Sarvenaz Tash book coverGoldenrod Moram loves nothing better than a good quest. Intrepid, curious, and full of a well-honed sense of adventure, she decides to start her own exploring team fashioned after her idols, the explorers Lewis and Clark, and to map the forest right behind her home. This task is complicated, however, by a series of unique events—a chance encounter with a mysterious old lady has her searching for a legendary blue rose. Another encounter lands her in the middle of a ragtag gang of brilliant troublemakers. And when she stumbles upon none other than the ghost of Meriwether Lewis himself, Goldenrod knows this will be anything but an ordinary summer . . . or an ordinary quest. Debut author Sarvenaz Tash combines an edge-of-your-seat adventure, a uniquely clever voice, and an unforgettable cast of characters to prove that sometimes the best adventures of all are waiting right in your own backyard.

  6. ooh that's the first i've seen of the trailer, so cute!! if i didn't already want to read the book, i definitely would now : )

  7. Just started a copy of the book I won. I would have soon bought it, having been a mapmaker as a kid -- good guys and bad guys neighborhood map of neighborhood -- and by training with a degree in Geography. Also love an adventure. Another good interview and great publicity! I don't know how authors did it before the current electronic age!

    1. I don't know either, Mark! The internet is certainly a great way to get word out about books. Also: I love that you were a mapmaker as a kid, and grew up to have a degree in Geography!

  8. 1) I'm impressed that you can play guitar. I've tried and decided I suck at pretty much anything involving creativity :P
    2) I'm loving your love for Rock Band. And Ugly Sweater is a pretty darn cool band name!

Thanks for commenting! I read each and every one, and reply as soon as I can :)

Please note: The Reading Fever is an award-free zone. I am very flattered, but comments are all the thanks I need.
