HPRC Books 1 & 2 Linkies + Giveaway + A HUGE Apology

First, I owe an apology to everyone who signed up for the Harry Potter Reading Challenge. I completely dropped the ball. I didn't read Harry Potter last month like I planned, got sidetracked and forgot to post the linky for everyone who did, and then got so embarrassed about it all that I put it off until I gathered the wits to admit my shame...which took WAY too long. So to all who signed up: I am really sorry.

You can expect the posts to be on time from here on out. In fact, I now have a schedule for the upcoming posts, Twitter parties, and giveaways, so that we're all on the same page (and so that I have something to hold myself to). You can find it all on the 2012 HPRC page.

Book 1 & 2 Discussion questions:
I haven't read The Chamber of Secrets yet, so a lot of these have to do with The Sorcerer's Stone.
  1. What was your first very first impression of Harry Potter himself? Did your impression change at the end of the first book?
  2. At what point in either book did you decide that you did, or didn't, like the story?
  3. Is there anything you dislike so far? Something you would change if you could?
  4. What is it about J.K. Rowling's writing that makes her books so appealing to so many people? Is it the characters? The plot? Something else? What do you love most about her writing?
  5. In the first book, we are introduced to a very different world than the one we live in. What were some things that blew your mind when you first read about them?
  6. Despite being so different, what do you think makes the wizard world so believable? What makes it a place that people want to escape to?
  7. In The Sorcerer's Stone, Professor Quirrel tells Harry, "There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it." What does this statement tell us about Professor Quirrel? Do you agree or disagree with him?
  8. In The Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore tells Harry, "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." The sorting hat also suggested Harry could fine great fame and glory in Slytherin House. What choices does Harry make that lead him away from darkness? Could he have been the good wizard that he was if some of those choices were different?
  9. If you're re-reading the series, what are some differences you've noticed this time? Are there things you didn't pick up on before? Or did you find you liked/disliked something differently this time?
  10. Just for fun: If you could make your own polyjuice potion, who would you disguise yourself as, and why?

    1. Yay! Neville! I'm so excited to see his character arc. I loved watching him grow up in the movies, and can't wait to read about it.

  2. Hey, for some reason my links appear twice on the list. Sorry about that, I don't know why that happened. :( Thanks for organizing this.

  3. Thank you for the awesome giveaway! My favorite Harry Potter character is and will always be Dumbledore. :)

    1. You and my brother would get along. His answer for everything on Earth is Dumbledore. :)

  4. My favorite is Hermione, I just love how much she enjoys reading!

  5. I think it might be Luna...although I have so many favourites it's really hard to choose one.

    1. I don't think I fully *got* her character in the movies (although I still really liked her), so I'm excited to see what happens with her in the books.

  6. I have three favorites! I love Hermione because she's brilliant and strong! Luna is pretty amazing too because she's not afraid to march to the beat of her own drum. And then there is Neville! He's such an underdog, but he always exceeds expectations, in my opinion.

    1. I love that you included Neville! I think he's the character I am most looking forward to seeing progress. His character arc in the movies was so inspiring, so I know it must be even more awesome in the books.

  7. I'm not sure I count because I don't think I signed up and I'm planning to read the books all in a row because I've wanted to reread them for a while. Do you want me to still participate or no?

    1. Of course! I would LOVE it if you would participate. :) And if you're entering the giveaway, your comment just got you one entry, and you can get another one by tweeting. You would just have to either leave a link to a review, or participate in the discussion to get the other 5 entries. :)

    2. I'm such a moron. I totally didn't read your linky format rules. I'm sorry. You can disqualify me, lol. And, I think the giveaway is fun, but I'm in it more for the discussion, lol. :)

    3. PS (last comment, lol): My favorite character is Dumbledore and Ron. I absolutely love them. And then, I'd have to say McGonagall.

    4. No problem! I just put a format up, so it would be easier to decipher once a lot of links have been added. The format isn't set in stone, so you're not disqualified. :)

Also: I love Dumbledore, but I LOVE Ron! He is so hilarious.

  8. Uhh that's a hard question. I really love Lupin, but McG is totally awesome, and Hermione is great as well... Okay, I'm gonna go with Lupin. :D

    1. Nice choice! I don't know much about him yet, but I can't wait to read about him. What book does he come in? It's the third, right?

  9. My favorite, without any doubt, is Severus Snape. I can proudly say that he was my favorite from beginning to end. He is such a deep character and even in the beginning I could tell there was something more going on. JK made sure to add him in even when it wasn't necessary. Not to mention I tend to go for the characters that remind me of myself, is that arrogant? lol ;)

    1. Not arrogant at all! Snape is a good one. I loved his character arc in the movies, so I can't wait to get all the juicy details from the books!

  10. I'm incredibly fond of Luna and Ron but I have to say that Hermione is my absolute favorite. She's a fantastic role model. Brave, smart, opinionated, loyal. In a YA world where so many weak heroines exist I am just glad she was created.

    1. I totally agree! I am loving Hermione. Side question: Is Luna in Harry's year? She hasn't been mentioned yet in the books, and I thought the sorting hat went through all of those in his year. I also thought that in the movies, she's in his year. Maybe I'm mistaken.

    1. Me too! She may even be able to *gasp!* replace Katniss as my favorite. I don't know for sure yet, so keep it on the DL. ;)

  12. Right now I love Hagrid, Hermione drives me nuts and Fred & George are absolutely a riot!!!! We'll see what I think later b/c this is a first read for me!!!!!

    Thanks for a great giveaway!

    1. I LOVE Fred & George! They are just too funny. I don't think they were in the movies enough, because I didn't think they were as funny in the movies. :D

  14. Thanks for the discussion questions! It was so fun to talk about Harry Potter again. I think Hermione is my favorite character. I feel like I'm a lot like her.

  15. My favorite characters besides the trio would have to be Luna or Fred and George.

  16. Thanks for organizing this reading challenge, Penelope. :) And a huge thanks for this fantastic giveaway. I think my favorite character is Severus Snape. It's a love-hate relationship, though.

  18. Thank you so much for hosting this challenge and such fantastic giveaway! I'm new to blogging but I hope I'll do everything right and I'm sure I'm going to have tons of fun reading the series! :D
It's hard for me not to love many characters when there's so many of them in the books, but my most favourite would have to be Hermione. It's amazing how she proves a person doesn't necessarily have to be good looking to achieve big things and it's the knowledge that matters more.

    ReplyDelete
  19. My favorite character is definitely Luna. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Draco will forever be my favourite because he's changed so much over the series. I really want to see HP in his point of view.

  21. Firstly, thankyou for hosting such a wonderful giveaway! I haven't signed up for the challenge (although I should, because I've already re-read the first two without a second thought), is it possible to still sign up for the challenge? Although I haven't signed up for the challenge, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about Harry Potter... :D

That is the hardest question to answer!! My favourite would have to be Ron or even Professor McGonnagal. Ron is under-rated and just amazing! And Professor McGonnagal is badass :)

Thanks for commenting! I read each and every one, and reply as soon as I can :)
