Top 10 of 2011: Top 10 Books Read in 2011

Click here to learn about the super secret Team Katniss twitter party for the Heroine Tourney!

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas yesterday! Santa visited our house and left one very happy boy in his wake. It's the first year that he's really been able to understand what goes on, and he was so excited all day long. Sadly, we didn't have a white Christmas this year, which is beyond bizarre. I'm holding out for a white New Year. :) On to the post!

I've decided to join in the Top 10 of 2011 meme, hosted by Jamie and Patricia from Two Chicks on Books, and Rachel from Fiktshun. It will be a week-long event, with a different topic each day. Today's topic is:

Top 10 Books I've Read in 2011

Click the covers to be taken to each book's Goodreads page.

10. Stay by Deb Caletti
From my review: "Stay resonates with me in ways I can't even put into words. It can be hard to understand abuse, and why someone would ever put up with it (I'm not judging here; I've had my own experiences with abuse). There is an honesty to the pages of this book . . . Somehow, Caletti is able to let the reader see how easily one can go down that path, and not even realize it."

9. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
From my review: "Allow me to begin this review by saying that if there is one book you get this Halloween season, make it this one. It is perfect. And even if it weren't Halloween season, this book would still be perfect. Why? Because it is unique. Blissfully, utterly, unique."

8. Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton
From my review: ". . . the characterization rocked. It was full of family members and friends who are so eccentric, you love them . . . they are all exciting, and very different than your average characters."

7. A Long, Long, Sleep by Anna Sheehan
From my review: "Sheehan took the classic story of Briar Rose, and turned it into a perfectly plausible futuristic retelling. She created a strong story using a few extreme personalities, and the dark side of human nature, and pulled it off well."

6. Matched by Ally Condie
From my review: "All this is wrapped in the packaging of a sweet love story, one that is forbidden. One that will have you confused and intrigued, and just dying to see how they end up together, because there is no way that they possibly can; not under the Society's watchful eye."

5. The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa (Iron Fey #3)
From my review: "There is so much action, fighting, emotion, drama, joking, and suspense, that it kept me reading all through the night. I had to know what happened next...and then what happened after that."

4. Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy #3)
My short review on Goodreads: "Truth: You haven't read of honor, love, or loss, until you've read this book. I lose more and more of myself with each book in this series!"

3. Blood Red Road by Moira Young
From my review: "Blood Red Road has managed to make its way onto my list of best books read this year. From the moment I began reading, I was taken on an adventure. I was entertained through every page, and was left satisfied, but ready for more."

2. Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley
From my review: "However you want you classify it, I am in love with this book. I am in love with these characters, whose lives are spinning so effortlessly out of control. I am in love with the author who managed to so fluidly tell their jumbled stories."

1. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
This is one of those books that you recommend to everyone who asks you for something to read. It is compelling and thought-provoking, and is exactly the type of gripping story you wish you could encounter in every book. If you read one book next year, make it this one.
From my review: "Marchetta is one of those writers who can bring emotions out of you that you've never experienced before; one of those who can make you see the world in a different way. And that happens in this book, believe me. I finished reading and immediately opened it back up and started from the beginning again so I could experience it all one more time; something I have never felt compelled to do before. It was even better the second time."

Honorable Mention: There You'll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones
From my review: "With a beautiful setting, and the clever situations the characters find themselves in, I fell hard for this book . . . this book is good for the soul. You will feel different after reading it. Maybe it won't change your life, but it will make you feel something beautiful."

  3. I keep telling myself to read On The Jellicoe Road for about a year now and I don't seem to have the guts to read it! I'm glad you like it, it reminds me that I really really need to read it for the nth time! but I seem afraid of the book, I'm afraid that it won't suffice my needs but I have said a hundred times that it's an awesome book, I think I have to read it this 2012! if not I guess I'm still afraid of it lol Blood Red Road is on my list too! I totally love and adore the book, the story of Saba is quite absorbing that it kept me reading and reading. I read The Iron Queen this year and it's pretty awesome I say but I don't know why it didn't get in my list of books. I also read Anna Dressed in Blood this year but... ahh I don't want to say this, I'm disappointed by it, now don't throw anything at me now. Graffiti Moon made it to my honorable mention! I totally love it, I only got a chance to read Frosbite but I'm pretty sure ill be able to finish the series this 2012 xD I'm hearing nothing but good things about Matched and this book making it on your list makes me want to read it soon, well I guess I have lots of books to read this 2012. A Long Long Sleep has a beautiful cover I say it will be on the top 10 book cover of the year definitely having it on your list oh I really need to read it! Great list!

  6. I love your list! I haven't read any of them except Shadow Kiss (I LOVE VA!) but they all sound really good. I have Jellicoe Road lined up for 2012

  7. I just finished BLOOD RED ROAD and while I thought there were some rather weak plot points, I thought the dialect and narration was excellent. The minimalist approach was also appropriate and well done.

Melina Marchetta's FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK is also excellent (though in a completely different genre). I highly recommend it. The sequel, FROI OF THE EXILES will be released in 2012.

A LONG LONG SLEEP was very scary in a way. I was left haunted by the parental abuse.

  8. I meant to read Jellicoe Road this year but didn't get around to it. I'll have to read it in 2012 though. I, honestly, don't think I've heard one bad thing said about it!

Blood Red Road is another I was planning to read but alas... next year it'll be :-D

Shadow Kiss is the only one I've read on your list and is probably one of the best in the series, imo. Even though, the ending was spoiled for me I still really enjoyed it.

  20. Dea: Agreed! It's such a fantastic book. I'm still not over it, and it had been months since I read it.

Jay: Hahaha, no hard feelings. You are totally open to your own opinion (although remember Anna can walk the world freely, now. Lol). Anyway, you should defintiely give Blood Red Road and especially Jellicoe Road a read next year! They will not let you down. :)

Kristin: Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. Oh, and if you think that synopsis makes you teary, wait until you read it!

Carina: Make sure you have tissues handy when you read both Shadow Kiss, and The Iron Queen. They're so emotional and beautiful.

Cait: Awesome! I'll be looking for your review of Jellicoe Road next year.

DogEar: I agree about Blood Red Road and A Long, Long, Sleep. In the case of the second, it was the parental abuse aspect that I found so compelling (I know that sounds strange, but I don't mean it in a bad way). I'll look into Finnickin of the Rock. I checked it out once but never got to it. I'm glad to know it's good!

Jennifer: I agree about Shadow Kiss. I absolutely loved it, and think it is the best of the series. I hope you read Jellicoe Road next year!
